Cambodia Garners International Support for Summit Aimed at Achieving a Mine-Free World

Phnom Penh: Cambodia has expressed gratitude for the encouragement and assistance offered by international allies, development partners, and stakeholders in anticipation of the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World, scheduled to take place later this year.

The sentiment was shared by Dr. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), during a meeting with Martin Vavra, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Cambodia.

Dr. Thuch emphasized the steadfast commitment of Cambodia towards demining efforts and underscored the nation’s ambition to be declared mine-free by 2025. Ambassador Vavra, in turn, commended Cambodia for its significant strides and accomplishments in the realm of mine action.

In the context of the upcoming Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World, Ambassador Vavra assured that he would communicate Cambodia’s appeal for support to his government for further review and consideration.

Cambodia, leveraging its profound experience and leadership in mine action, has been chosen to preside over and host the 5th Review Conference of the Mine Ban Convention. This pivotal event, the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World, is set to convene in November 2024 in the cultural province of Siem Reap. It will witness the participation of delegates from 164 countries and various international organizations, marking a significant milestone in the global campaign against landmines.
